Waking up early

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” – Ben Franklin

early rise

In a world so busy, where everything is moving so fast, you need to take a step back and examine yourself and the way you see the world. Having a quiet moment everyday is therefore paramount to keep your sanity in such a crazy world. Waking up early affords you the opportunity to meditate and plan your day. The early hours of the morning is so peaceful and quiet. You’re able to think clearly and have that moment to yourself alone. You can read a book in peace, have breakfast which is the most important meal of the day, incorporate meditation into your life which can be a key to your happiness. Put it to a test for about a month where you wake up earlier than you normally do and see how your life transforms for the better and as you become more productive.

Treat others with respect and show Love always.

Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Matthew 22:39

love and respect

Respect they say is reciprocal. Give to others what you want to attract to yourself. Respect every human being you meet and treat then with love and kindness for everyone is fighting a battle. Be good to the people on your way up because it’s likely you also meet them on your way down. Smile always, you never know how far a smile could go to bless a persons soul. Don’t forget that we’re all humans first asides race, culture or tribe so always be respectful to all beings whether they are below you, equals or above you.  Love yourself and also love others and never forgot that’s it’s always better to love than to hate.

Say I love you more often

love more

When was the last time you loved someone and professed your love to them? When was the last time those three healing words slipped out of your mouth? I love you Mummy, I love you daddy, thanks for making my life better. I love you my best friend, thank you for being with me through thick and thin. I love you son, daughter, thank you for giving my life meaning.

“I love you” said at the right time and to the right person, can heal a broken heart, give hope to the hopeless and abandoned and offer freshness and vitality to every area of ones life. It feels good to love and be loved in return so why not give it a try. Pick up your phone and say those three words to those who matter to you.

Quit smoking

The Federal Ministry of Health warns that smokers are liable to die young,”

quit smoking

I’m sure you may have heard this at one point in time or the other. And whether you believe it or not, smoking is a dangerous killer. Smokers often come up with excuses like, whether you smoke or you don’t, you still die anyways. Smoking causes a wide variety of medical illnesses and decreases your quality of life. It’s like committing suicide just that instead of an instant death, it kills you gradually. Smoking increases your chances of getting cancer, reduces your tolerance for exercise, increases your blood pressure, associated with several cardiovascular diseases, causes erectile dysfunction etc. so think twice before you pick up your next cigarette stick. Would you rather sacrifice your sex like for cigarettes? Think about it .

Open your mind to learning

The capacity to learn is a gift, the ability to learn is a skill, the willingness to learn is a choice.. Brian Herbert

Learning something new is always exciting. Have an inquisitive mind towards everything in life. Learning never ends. You can learn from anything and everything. You can learn from the ants, the birds, the flowing stream. Look at something deeply and you can learn a thing or two. You can learn how to be calm just by watching the flowing stream, learn how to be orderly just by observing the ants, it just takes the willingness and zeal. Aspire to learn something new everyday and grow in wisdom. The environment we live in is too vast and there’s always something to learn as long as you’re really looking.

Never give up on a dream

Never give up on a dream because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway..Earl Nightingale

never give up

Sometimes in this race called life, we often run out of stamina and the will to continue. Times like this, we just want to give up and tell ourselves we’ve tried all we could. Is it really true you’ve tried everything? What if you gave it one more fight, one more push. Sometimes when the road gets really tough, and it feels like you’ve run out of energy and breath, you should realize at that moment that you’re half way there. What if your breakthrough was just right in front of you just within your reach at the moment you decided to quit. Nothing good about in life comes easy and life entails being able to move from one struggle to the next without losing your energy. What is that dream you have at the back of your heart that seems impossible to achieve? Start gradually by doing what you have to do everyday and you’ll find the strength to follow your dreams with your heart.

Question everything

question everything

Not everything you see or hear is true. In today’s world where we have different sources of information, you must learn to be assertive. You must learn to question everything even those things regarded as true by the majority of people. Try to find out why it might wrong. Don’t just believe something because everyone agrees with it instead be holistic on your thoughts. Be as inquisitive as a child who asks such questions as “ why is the sky blue”? When you question everything, you become an independent thinker and never fall into the dangers of believing a single sided story according to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Stop living in your past

I have a past, but I do not live there anymore.. Unknown

stop living in your past

What if you’re the cause of your own unhappiness and sadness? Are you living in your failed past relationships? Are you caught up with thinking about how it could have been and why it turned out the way it did? Living in your past is like living in a cage and when you are caged, you cannot fly. You get stuck in the shadows of pain and regrets. But when you leave in the present; you’re presented with a million fresh starts. You have the power to make the best version of yourself. Your life becomes more meaningful when you make a conscious decision to live in the present and embrace the power of now.

Make a list of what you want to accomplish everyday

to-do list

When you wake up in the morning, start by making a to-do list of what you would want to accomplish that day. And ensure you meet your target before the day ends. Having a to-do list makes you more productive. You can start small. Make a list of two things you want to accomplish and try your best to cross them off before the day ends.

Things I wish I knew before medical school : Tales by medical students

Things I wish I knew before medical school : Tales by medical students

Here’s a follow up on my previous post “10 Things You Should Know Before Starting Medical School”. Medical school as you may or may not know has and will always have different impact on different people so I did a survey where I asked people what they wish they knew before they started medical school and below are their responses.

Ekpette Nyemajiye : Nigeria
  • I wish I knew how time consuming it would be.
  • I wish I knew that 6 years in medical school is just the beginning of my career in medicine.
Angela Azinta : Nigeria
  • Getting into medical school is hard, getting through is harder but the hardest of them all is post graduation. What to do after? Exams to write, what to do for specialty, which country? Etc.
  • Medicine is not just about care. It’s a full time job, it’s a lifestyle. You deserve to earn a lot from it. Money is very important. I can’t over stress it.
  • Medical school takes a longtime. Yeah in-fact, you’re forever a medical student.
  • I wish I used my holidays more efficiently because they hardly come by now.
  • I wish I focused more on my hobbies and skills instead of use time as an excuse because time will never be sufficient. I realized this much later.
Annisha Skinnier : Jamaica
  • Before I started medical school, I wish I knew that high school studying practices don’t work. You need to be mentally prepared to revamp your studying practices
  • That we actually look like cuts of beef on the inside and that it’s Normal to get hungry after your first anatomy practical. Don’t feel bad or guilty. You’re not alone
  • Get your first and second year text books from 4-5th year students. Don’t need to buy them new and you can pass them on when you’re done
  • Oh, crying is Normal and healthy. Locking yourself in a bathroom stall for a 10 minutes is a perfectly acceptable behaviour.
  • Seek help if you need it and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The people staying silent behind you will also benefit from whatever answer the lecturer gives
  • As hard as it may seem, find time for at least one hobby. Not related to Medicine or the hospital or sick people. Something away from health.
  • Sometimes your friends that aren’t studying or studying medicine wont understand and thats ok. They wont understand your struggles or how you manage your time. Just keep focused on what you have to do.
  • Sometimes your family wont understand either. My aunt kept talking about graduating with honors while I was trying to claw my way up out of a deep depression. I’d tell her to stop but she just didn’t get it.
  • If you’re studying abroad like me, people will want to be friends just for English practice or free medical advice. You neighbors will be kinder and nicer. Random people will walk up and talk to you more. So don’t be surprised or hurt by it. There are good, nice people out there, just have to sift through the other ones to find them.
  • make sure your professors know you or know your face. Recommendations come in handy and aren’t always easy to get.
  • FAILURE IS INEVITABLE. Could be with a class or taking a blood sample. It’s gonna happen and don’t freak out or feel bad or embarrassed when it does. Don’t fear it happening again either. Just swallow it and keep it moving. I’ve seen it break people.Gonna happen one way or another. Don’t fear it. Embrace it. If you own it, it cannot control you. THIS I WISH I KNEW THE MOST.
  • You get used to sticking your fingers up butts or vaginas. It’s no big deal. You’ll see lots of dicks. That’s no big deal. Don’t be nervous. It’s just like looking up someone’s nose. Just explain what you have to do and why you’re doing it. People will freak out if you don’t.
Dzemil Dizdarevic : Serbia
  • Well, I wish someone had told me I really would have to limit my social activities in order to pass all the exams
  • I wish honestly that someone had told me being a doctor involves working 32 hours straight
  • I wish someone had told me that its all worth it
Tawfiq Alqeisi: Jordan

Merve Akbas : Cyprus
  • I wish they told me that graduating medical school is just the beginning.
  • I wish they told me that medicine is not like it’s portrayed in movies
How to Get the Perfect Sleep Every Night

How to Get the Perfect Sleep Every Night

Sleep is a vital part of our daily lives. It’s a known fact but to a few people, sleep is not so important. These people might prefer to have very busy schedules during the day, working endlessly and tirelessly, attending to several businesses and social events. They only sleep when their body can no longer stay awake and when they feel extremely tired. In contrast, others lie in bed night after night unable to sleep, tossing from one angle of the bed to another and before they know it, morning comes, they get up feeling very exhausted and not able to carry out their daily functions. In this article, I’ll discuss sleep issues and how to get a perfect sleep every night.

I’ve often wondered why so many people can’t sleep while others are so eager to stay awake and attend to several functions. To me, nothing brings more comfort than waking up refreshed after getting a good night’s sleep. Before discussing best ways to get sleep and how you can fall asleep faster, I would like to discuss what happens when we sleep.

The Body’s Biological Clock

The mechanism of sleeping or falling asleep is still not very well understood however, several kinds of research done have published that sleep is an organized complex process that is controlled by the brain and usually followed the 24-hour biological clock.

 Can't Get a Good Night's Sleep

Can’t Get a Good Night’s Sleep

A newborn baby sleep almost 20 hours a day but as we get older, our sleep cycle changes. As stated previously, there are 24 hours a day and some people can do with just three to four hours of sleep while others require up to eight to ten hours of sleep daily. What’s the appropriate allocated time for sleep?

avoid overthinking at night

The body’s clock is controlled by chemical substances in our brain. There’s a hormone released by several organs of the body called Melatonin but the major source is the pineal gland in the brain. These hormones had been associated with a reduction in the body’s metabolism that occurs before we fall asleep.
As melatonin is reduced, blood flow to the brain is reduced, the body temperature is reduced and our muscles gradually lose tone and become flaccid.

What Happens When We Sleep?

There are two phases of sleep. REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM sleep. Non-Rem sleep is further divided into four stages of different sleep intensity. During REM sleep, the eye moves rapidly and during a good night’s sleep, REM sleep occur several times alternating with non- REM SLEEP.

Sometimes, dreaming occurs when we sleep and this occur during the REM sleep phase. During this sleep period, the muscles are very relaxed and as a result when the individuals wakes up, they usually feel very refreshed. More so when we learn new information during the day, these new information are being consolidated to our long term memory when we have better sleep at night.

As stated earlier, there are different stages of non REM sleep. Stages 1 to 4. The stages 1 defines a light sleep stage while stage four is the deep sleep stage. In periods of deep sleep which involves stages 3 and 4, the blood pressure and heart rate are very low which helps our cardiovascular system fight cardiovascular diseases, and also it’s during the period of deep sleep that our bodies secret the largest growth hormones which helps with injury and tissue repair and also with general body growth.

Sufficient amount of sleep is vital for the body and mind. When we avoid sleeping, we become more stressed “read about stress and how to manage it” so we need to learn how to get a perfect sleep every night.

The Secret to Natural Stress Relief

The brain is the power house of the body, it controls all our body functions. It contains nerve cells that must work together for the body to function normally. We’ve all been stressed at one point in our lives. Some of us experience daily stress which could be a beneficial stress (positive stress) or non-beneficial stress (negative stress). For the purpose of this post. I’ll use stress to mean a negative stress. Read more

Have a close confidant: having a close confidant decreases the risk of depression. Confidants can be friends, family, colleagues at work, marriage partner. Surround yourself with positive people, have good relationships in your place of work or school, and most especially have a very close family life. These are prerequisite for overcoming depression.

Be more active in your day to day life: in my previous post ‘how to cope with Loneliness’ I addressed the importance of engaging in fun and interesting activities. This prevents the feeling of Loneliness. Talk to friends, neighbors. Clean your house, rearrange the book shelf. Occupy your mind with several productive activities that brings satisfaction.

Think positive: it’s very easy for the human mind to dwell on the negative things. So program your mind to think the right things and dismiss the negatives. Where your mind goes, your energy flows. There’s a power in positive thinking. You’re less likely to be depressed when you think positive.

Keep on moving forward: some people tend to dwell on their past mistakes. When you fall down, make sure you fall forward not backwards. The present is what we have to make us who we are.
